Blogging The Essential Guide – a book review

Blogging-The-Essential-Guide-cover-image

This is a new book about blogging. It isn’t aimed at kids, but it is aimed at beginner bloggers. It’s quite short and the layout is very clear and easy to read, so if you’re starting a blog and you like having a textbook to follow (rather than googling for information as you go), then this could do the job.

Antonia Chitty and Erica Douglas have approached the subject of blogging by stripping it back to basics with Blogging – The Essential Guide, and they recently sent me a review copy.

It includes simple and straightforward inspiration – lots of advice on how to get started and more importantly, how to keep going. I thought the chapters on law and basic online skills were particularly good.

Though I think new bloggers will get the most out of this book, it has tips to offer wherever you are in your blogging journey. I’ve been blogging for 5 years and I learned stuff.

And it’s all very nicely designed and beautifully laid out – I think this is particularly important for an information-heavy book, as without clear design it can become too much to take in.

I would have liked to see an index or glossary with this book – when you’re mentioning stuff like page rank, Klout or creative commons to a beginner, some sort of explanation is necessary. When I’d finished reading it I wanted to go back and look stuff up, which was hard to do without an index. If you find any of the words confusing, that’s the time to go googling.

This is a useful guide to keep by your laptop and return to repeatedly. But don’t assume that it’s simply a book for beginners. It’s a book for bloggers, and we all have something to learn.

I am curious if you have had a chance to read the email I had sent you recently about our badge awards for quality reviews of children’s literacy.

Would you be able to let me know if you got it and if you will be able to place it on your site?
