Why can’t you just take images off Google for a blog post?

So you’ve written an awesome blog post, and now all you need is the perfect picture to go with it. How do you do that?

Well, the first thing not to do is simply rip it off the internet.

You might think that it doesn’t really matter, that everybody takes images off the internet, but actually a lot of times this is not legal and carries risks that you probably don’t want to get into.

What it boils down to is copyright – ie who owns the image. Images on the internet aren’t automatically free for anybody to use.

Generally, the person who took the image owns it, unless they sold it (for example, to a picture agency, in which case the agency become the new owners of the image).

Another exception would be if the person has said that their image is available for non-commercial Creative Commons use – in this case you can use the image for personal/non money making purposes but you can’t used it to sell stuff (eg for a book cover or product packaging).

A lot of the pictures we use here on KBC come from the Creative Commons section on Flickr, as those photographers are happy for their work to be reproduced as long as you credit/name them and link back to the original.

One day, you might want to make your living creating stuff. That can’t happen if everybody is just ripping off everybody else’s stuff for free. Mostly if you do this you won’t get into any trouble. But once in a while photo owners do get angry about their pictures being used illegally, without permission, and then they’ll smack down hard on that website owner.

Also, it’s not particularly creative to simply use whatever image comes up on the first page of Google. Do you want your blog to look bland and unimaginative? I guess not. So use your imagination and be creative. It’s more fun too.

So if you want a nice picture for your latest blog post, what’s a blogger to do? Check back soon and we’ll show exactly where to find great, original images for your blog, for free and without breaking copyright.

Thank you very much – I am getting them off the internet sometimes so I will definitely stop. If it’s a book I normally get it off the publishers webpage or Amazon.
