Earth Hour – Turn off your blog for an hour

earth-hour

This Saturday, you’re being invited to switch off. At 8.30pm, it’s time for WWF’s Earth Hour.

What is Earth Hour?

Earth Hour is a campaign supported by WWF, the World Wildlife Fund. It’s an annual event aimed at focusing people’s attention on the planet and how we can protect it. Hundreds of millions of people will also take part, on the same night, all across the world in a huge, symbolic show of support.

 How do we get involved?

Taking part is very simple – all you need to do is turn off all non-essential lights in your house for an hour at 8.30pm on Saturday 23rd March. Obviously talk to your family beforehand about this so they don’t all get a shock when the lights go off.

If you want to show your support for Earth Hour, you can do so in a number of ways.

There are Twitter and Facebook profile pics and free ecards to download here

There are posters to download here

If you belong to a youth group you can find more resources to help you get involved here.

What to do during your hour of darkness?

There are lots of fun things you could do with your family – how about an evening nature walk, or a game of Scrabble by candlelight? You could tell scary stories, make shadow puppets, or just go to sleep.

Or you could listen to stories together – WWF-UK ambassadors Kevin McCloud, Alistair McGowan and Miranda Richardson have recorded a few of the classic ‘Just So’ stories by Rudyard Kipling. Find out more about these free 60 minute audiobooks here.

What can kid bloggers do?

We know lots of you are interested in environmental issues, so this could be a great topic to blog about. You could blog about Earth Hour before the event to try to get your family and friends to join in too. Or you could blog about it afterwards and tell people about what your hour of darkness was like. Post a link below if you blog about Earth Hour and we will share your posts on Twitter and Facebook.

And try not to bump into anybody in the dark!
