Blogging our way through life!
How often should you post on your blog?

I don’t know about you, but I haven’t been posting as much as usual on my blogs recently.

Real life, family visits, illness and all the rest of it just got in the way. And yet I look around and other bloggers don’t seem to have the same problem, with lots and lots of posts being published even on Christmas day.

So how often should you post on your blog?

Think of your blog as being like a magazine that you run. Therefore you set the publishing schedule – it’s up to you how often you post. You might start off with a big burst of energy and enthusiasm and want to write lots of posts. But this is hard to sustain, so pretty soon you might run out of steam.

For readers, a blog that’s regularly updated is better as it gives them a reason to return. So it’s better to write two posts a week for a month that one every day for a week then nothing for a month.

Here are some ideas to help you post more often:

  • Remember that you don’t have to tell the whole story in one post. If the post is about an event, such as a day out, you can write about the start of it then leave it at a dramatic moment (like a soap opera cliff hanger) and invite your readers to come back the next day to find out what happened next.
  • A really quick way to create a post is to link to a video you like from YouTube – maybe something that makes you laugh, or music you like – then just add in a few lines to introduce it.
  • Or you can leave out the words altogether and just upload a photo or a drawing as a post.
  • Ask someone else to write a guest post – maybe a friend or another blogger you like. Some blogs schedule guest posts when the main blogger knows they’ll be busy or away.

So set your own schedule to suit you. Think about when would be the best time of the day or week for you to write posts. Some people like to spend a big chunk of time writing posts at the weekend, then scheduling them to be published during the following week.

What you don’t want to happen is for the fun to get sucked out of your blogging so that it feels like another obligation, like homework. A blog post should be something you feel like you want to write, rather than something you feel you have to do. If that happens, and it starts to feel like a chore, maybe it’s time to take a break.

Don’t pay too much attention to how often other people blog – their blog, their rules; your blog, your rules.

Set yourself a small target that you feel like you can keep to – maybe posting once a week? – and if you decide to do more than that, then that’s great too.

I’m still in the trap of trying to post most days, which is exhausting with three of. I think I get a bit despondent if nobody’s looked at it so I post something to encourage them. Probably should stop being so vain!

Maybe it’s less about vanity and more about sanity and the importance of preserving yours!

I guess it depends on the subject of your posts, but sometimes I think posting every day is a bit much for readers and can be as offputting as not posting at all.

Also the more often you post, the more likelihood that the quality of posts will suffer, unless your life really is *that* interesting every day. So don’t feel bad if you take a few days or a few weeks off – you’ll probably come back better than before.

I find leaving a post for a few days encourages more comments, whereas posting again the next day means nobody comments on the older post. I think it’s like letting cheese mature – give posts a time to reach all their potential audience before putting up something new.

As for how often you SHOULD post – as often as you feel like it. I often leave gaps between posts – sometimes 3 or 4 days, sometimes 10. I don’t notice any big dip in readership when I take a break.

I planed to post every Monday. But it is hard all the time. If I miss I do Tuesday or Wednesday but I am trying every week and so far I am successful. Sometime I post from my old diary . This helps to publish every week,

I post quite regularly on my blog (three or four times a week)… But now I’m about to pick my GCSE options, I’ll have less time to post… It’s rather sad, but hopefully my followers won’t mind too much!

  6. Hey,

Great image – I know what you mean!

We also get asked the how often question, and did more research on how often small businesses should not only blog, but also post on Facebook and tweet, using simple math.

    What do you think? http://bit.ly/14VUrFe

    Thanks for the inspiration,
    Alexandra

I have to blog for the business I work for but its hard trying to find content or think of things to post because we are only small.. So its a matter of finding news related to children which leads me to having to reblog from other websites with my opinions etc and it can be quite hard.

I try to post often and so far it’s going well. Some weeks get 3 or 4 post whereas other weeks only get 1 or 2
