Meet the 10 year old author

image descriptionHere at KBC we love to find out about kids being creative, so we were delighted to hear from 10-year-old author Siddharth Patil from Maryland, USA who has just published his first book Will the Penguin.

Filled with vivid Antarctic wildlife, this story follows a lonely and bullied penguin on a journey through the Antarctic. In his travels, the penguin Will encounters the harsh reality of dwindling icebergs and the effect of mankind on his natural world.

So Siddharth, why did you want to write about a penguin?

I chose a penguin because if you think about it, when ever we think about Global Warming, you think about Polar Bears. But a penguin is completely different. They have different dangers than the Polar Bears. (I also chose a Penguin because they can hold swords with their flippers!)

What research was needed for the book? Was it easy to write?

I looked it up on websites for Global Warming effects on the penguins.

And no, it was hard to write. I got the idea of it by once imagining a penguin with a sword carved of pure ice and glory, but I had no idea how he got the sword and why he’s even holding it in the first place. As I then stared into the ceiling, more pictures of this penguin came to me. The penguin was now combating with other animals, like skuas, leopard seals, and more. The story started to get together by then, and I soon whipped out a computer and started typing.

What advice do you have for other young authors?

If you like the idea of what your story idea is, then just do it. Believe and be confident of yourself. Just because you’re a kid doesn’t mean you can’t write good stories.

What do you like to do as well as writing? Who is your biggest hero?

I like to play video games because who wouldn’t? My biggest hero is my mom because she encouraged me to continue the process of writing a story through out.

Any ideas for what you’d like to do when you grow up? Will you write any more stories?
I want to be a cartoonist, author, and a game designer, and yes, I might write other stories, and I’ve already started on a story called (|SPOILER ALERT|) The Videogame Adventure Of Captain Jim, where a over-obsessed kid loves video games and wants to get a cool game, but doesn’t have enough money to do so, so he must find a way to earn enough money to buy it, and along the story there’s this annoying consciousness that keeps on trying to make Jim have a eternal punishment for a weird reason.

Good luck to you Siddharth! We can’t wait to read more of your stories.
