What do you do if the traditionally published magazines and websites don’t feature the kind of things you and your friends are interested in? How about making your own online magazine instead?
That’s what three friends from Florida have done. Grace, Sara and Ainsley (pictured below) are all aged 12 and have combined their talents to create Th!nk Magazine
Ainsley agreed to answer a few questions about what it’s like to create an online magazine with your friends.
So Ainsley, tell us a little about why you decided to start Th!nk Magazine – who had the initial idea, why did you want to make an online magazine?
The other Th!nk authors and I are apart of a mother-daughter bible study called B.R.I.G.H.T. Lights. At the meeting about ‘How to Develope a Ministry’, all 3 of us authors were inspired to use our gifts to glorify God. God spoke to all of us that summer about starting a Free Christian Magazine for girls our age. I don’t remember who had the idea, but we knew it was the right thing to do. We wanted the magazine to be online because technology is so much easier these days. My dad also is very experienced with websites.
What do you think your magazine offers readers that other magazines don’t?
I think our magazine offers fun ways to grow in your relationship with God. Most magazines for girls( like American Girl and SHINE Brightly) cost money, but Th!nk thinks that you shouldn’t need to pay for fun ways to grow in your relationship with God.
How does it work with having 3 authors – how do you decide what to write?
We all are very close friends so it works out just fine. We all have certain pages we write, but by the end of the month, we all work together to finish the magazine even if we don’t normally do that page.
What are your favourite sort of topics to write about?
Personally, I like writing about my personal experiences and explaining the Bible. What’s great about Th!nk, is that there is so many different types of pages, that all 3 authors can include their favorite topics.
Do you have any advice for other kids who are thinking of starting their own magazine?
It is a lot of hard work, so I definitely suggest doing it with friends. Don’t get frustrated if you don’t get a lot of readers, when you first start, it is kinda slow.
What do you like to do when you’re not working on the magazine?
I am very involved with sports. I play volleyball, soccer and basketball. Currently I am playing basketball for my school. I also play flute, which I love. I am also learning to speak Spanish so that I can go on mission trips and communicate to those there.
What would you like to do when you grow up?
I don’t know yet what God plans for me to be. I hope it requires writing because that is one of my passions.
