How to write a review post on your blog

one cat's opinion on blog reviews

Reviewing has always been very popular on blogs because let’s face it, it’s fun to share cool stuff you love so that other people can enjoy it too.

You could review a place you’ve visited, a book you’ve read, a game you’ve played or a movie you’ve seen – anything that you think is worth telling people about.

What does a review post need to contain?

  • At least one original picture of the product, place or event
Your own pictures are what makes a post more personal and unique. Anybody can find a manufacturer’s product shot like they show in adverts, and sometimes these can be useful for showing a product clearly, especially if it’s something like a DVD cover. But a blog is not an advert, it’s your space, so create your own original images to illustrate your review.
  • Your initial impressions
What did you think before hand? Were you excited or a bit unsure? What were your expectations at the start?
  • Later impressions
How did the product or place live up to your expectations? Was it better or worse than you thought it would be?
  • What do you think about the packaging?
Too much packaging? Not enough? Easy or difficult to open? Does it make the product look great or not enhance it enough? If there’s an instruction manual, how helpful is it?
  • Anything you didn’t like?
You don’t have to like all of the stuff all of the time. Life would be pretty boring if you did. An honest opinion, fairly given, is fine to express. If there’s something about a product you don’t like, be constructive and say what you think would improve it. And if you really didn’t like it, read our post here about how to write a bad review.
  • The price and where to buy
Even if you didn’t pay for it yourself, you can say if you thought it was good value for money
  • A video if you have one
Either make your own videos or look for one on Youtube. Most films and video games will have trailers and behind the scenes videos and these can be fun to include too.

What else do you think a good review post should contain? Leave a link to any review posts you’ve written that you’d like to share
