Think you haven’t got time to learn about blogging? Think again.
Ready, set, go……
- Blog about something you love
- Be interesting. This is easy if you are already interested in whatever you’re blogging about. See point 1.
- Blog as often as you have something to say that deserves to be shared
- Don’t just blog because you think you should and you haven’t written a post in a while
- Use an original image as often as possible
- Don’t put somebody else’s photo on your blog without their permission, even if you took the picture in a public place
- Use a spell check
- Keep paragraphs short
- Aim for at least 250 words per post
- More than 600 words and it might be worth splitting into two posts
- Though long essays are OK sometimes if you’ve got something that really needs to be said
- And if you’ve got a great picture or video you might not need any words at all
- Don’t get your blog design get too busy – if you’ve got lots of blog badges cluttering up the page maybe put them on a separate page by themselves
- See your blog as an opportunity to get better at writing and literacy
- While you’re at it, learn the difference between their and they’re; its and it’s; you’re and your. That’s a skill for life.
- Think about whether you want to be anonymous before you blog, not after
- Comment on lots of other blogs to make connections in the blogging community
- Don’t leave mean comments. If you can’t think of anything nice to say, keep schtum.
- If you enjoyed a post enough to read it right through to the end, leave a comment
- Reply to comments. Ignoring them looks arrogant.
- If it’s turning into a big reply, make that your next blog post instead.
- It’s good to have a blogging niche, but not essential. Your niche could simply all the things you’re interested in
- If you do have a niche, pick one that is wide enough so you don’t run out of ideas
- If you’re writing a blog review, it’s OK to say you didn’t like it. Despite what they said in The Lego Movie, not everything is awesome.
- Include an About Me page so that readers can find out a little more about the person behind the blog
- If you want people to contact you, include an email address or contact form. You can always set up a dedicated gmail address for this, but make sure you check it regularly.
- Add a search box so readers can easily find previous posts
- If you write an angry post, sleep on it before hitting ‘Publish’
- Accept that not everyone will like your blog, and this is fine. Not everyone likes ice cream. The world does not collapse as a result.
- It’s OK for your blog not to be perfect when you start. It might not ever be perfect. Blogs are the story of a journey, a work in progress rather than a finished product.

I love this! Very good tips. I can’t emphasize the About Me page thing enough…before I read anything else on a blog, I open up the About Me page and see who I’m dealing with. 🙂
